Abcnews.go.com did an investigative report on eight households to show how germy their pillows are. After testing the pillows, ABCnews concluded that there is just so much mold and bacteria in an ordinary pillow that some even rival that of a very dirty kitchen sink. Website Medical Daily echoed the same sentiment, saying that pillows need to be replaced regularly so you could be spared all of the health problems you can get from the molds, bacteria, and dust mites that have started calling it ‘home’. “In addition to replacing your pillow, washing it can help to reduce the buildup of unwanted critters. When washing your pillows, put in a couple at a time so the washer stays balanced. Wash with hot water and mild detergent. Hot water will kill dust mites, without the need for bleach or other chemicals. Dry the pillows on a low setting and put a couple clean tennis balls, wrapped in white socks, in the dryer to ensure your pillow remains fluffy without transferring dyes. Before you take the pillow out of the dryer, make sure it’s completely dry to avoid creating a moist breeding ground perfect for mold.”

“Your Keurig coffee machine may be a bacteria breeding ground, according to a recent test performed by CBS stations in Pittsburgh, Dallas, and Chicago. The news outlets swabbed the various parts of 29 Keurig coffee makers, sending samples to a lab to be analyzed. One swab from a machine in Pittsburgh contained 4.6 million colonies of bacteria and mold, and E.coli showed up on a machine in Dallas.”
